What was all that commotion on Cold Spring Road?

A couple of weeks ago, a single-engine plane crashed in Syosset, in Nassau County, resulting in the deaths of all three people aboard. Though the accident was tragic, it could have been considerably worse, since the plane crashed on Cold Spring Road, a fairly busy street, near dozens of homes and several schools. Miraculously, although the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. no one on the ground was injured. As a neighbor pointed out, “It could have been a lot worse. You have to understand, it’s a major thoroughfare." The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the seven-passenger plane had three passengers on board: two male adults and one female adult. The plane was traveling from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Plainville Connecticut, just outside of Hartford. The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to Robert Gretz, a senior air safety investigator, who told reporters at the time that the plane simply disappeared from radar and “broke up in flight" over Syosset.

The Area Affected by the Crash

A well-to-do hamlet of about 20,000 people, Syosset is near the eastern edge of Nassau County. The road on which the accident occurred is one of the busiest in the area, used by multiple school buses throughout the day. A section of Cold Spring Road remained closed and authorities told residents to stay close to their homes. Residents who returned to their homes after the crash had to park at some distance and be escorted home by police officers. For hours after the accident, police knocked on doors to inform residents of the occurrence and to search their yards for possible evidence of the disaster. Many people knew from all the noise, commotion and sirens knew that there had been a major event, but did not know what exactly had happened. Air travel is a relatively safe means of travel, but, as this unexpected event demonstrates, that doesn’t mean that there is no risk involved. If you have been injured in an airplane accident, or lost someone you love in such an accident, you should make sure that you contact a personal injury attorney who specializes in such accidents and will therefore be able to give you the most expert legal advice possible. Whether the accident involved a small private plane or a jetliner, such a skilled attorney will clarify your options and help you to receive the compensation you deserve.
